What is Hyalgan?
This product is a solution of hyaluronic acid sodium salt which is used in the treatment of pain in OA of the knee. OA is a disease which affects the joints making them painful and difficult to move; sometimes the area around the affected joint can swell and change the shape of the joint.
Hyalgan is found naturally in the joints where it acts as a lubricant and shock absorber, as well as playing a number of key roles in normal joint function. In people with OA of the knee, the Hyalgan in the knee joints is broken down and this contributes to pain and joint disability. This product doses have been shown to reduce pain which might then make it easier to move affected joints.
What about contraindications?
You should tell your doctor before you are given a Hyalgan use if you know that you are allergic to any ingredient in the product. The active ingredient in this product is of avian origin, so you should tell your doctor if you know that you are allergic to bird proteins. You should not be given this product if you know that you have any of these allergies. You should not be given Hyalgan for joints which are infected in any way, or where there is any skin disease in the area of the skin over the joint or around the joint.
Advantages:
Hyalgan has proven to offer more clinical benefits when it is used during the initial treatment process. Furthermore; Hyalgan has a good safety profile and no known drug interactions have been reported thus far. Hyalgan has also proven to be reliable as it targets only the area (knee) that requires treatment and not the whole body; thereby enhancing its efficacy and safety.
Facts about Hyalgan doses:
Hyalgan is usually delivered once a week for a total of 3 weeks. This however is determined by the doctor. It plays the role of a lubricant and a shock absorber; thereby helping the knees to function normally.
Possible side effects:
A few common to bothersome side effects of Hyalgan are likely to include joint pain, headache, swelling/pain at the site of use, skin irritation, tenderness or pain in the knees or numbness and tingling. Rare to serious side effects may also include swelling of lips, face, tongue or throat, hives or difficulty in breathing. It is important to seek medical attention as soon as the serious side effects begin to appear.
